We recently hosted the fifth group of churches (check out their websites through the links on the lower right hand column of this blog) in Leadership Network's Multi-site Churches Leadership Community. As a part of that gathering, we invited Mark Miller, Vice President of Training and Development for Chick-fil-A, to talk about leadership development as employed in their model. The next several posts will include some of the key ideas included in his presentation.
First - 5 assessment questions used to help the Chick-fil-A team develop leadership:
- Do you have a common definition for leadership? There are over 6000 published definitions of leadership. You have to decide on one. We had to define the leadership structure for Chick-Fil-A.
- Do our leaders have the necessary skills to deliver on the definition?
- Are we giving emerging leaders ample opportunities to lead? Most leaders are going to learn most of what they know about leading by leading.
- Are we recognizing and rewarding the leadership behavior that we are promoting? People are always watching the leader.
- Are our existing leaders modeling the leadership behaviors we are advocating?
I think these are great questions for assessing leadership development in any organization, and especially in multi-site churches.
How does your model measure up on this assessment?
What other questions do you ask to determine effectiveness of your leadership development model?
