I spent several hours Monday with the senior leadership team of College Church– Jeff, Bruce and Dave. College Church is, believe it or not, located near the campus of Olivet Nazarene College. There are long relational ties between the university and church. Jeff Crossnoe, Senior Pastor, has been there for only about 3 years. He has served in mega-churches all over the country and has been a long term friend of Leadership Network. Bruce and Dave have fascinating backgrounds that play into College’s multi-site vision in significant ways. Bruce Paul has a background in social work and is spearheading the work that they are doing at their third site whose primary focus is compassion ministry. They are serving 700-800 families each week at that site and are in conversation about adding a worship experience there. David Bach serves as the Director of Operations. He has been a member of the church for over 8 years and came on staff a year ago from a career in multi-unit corporations in the family entertainment and technology areas. His background and expertise are helping to shape the framework of the growing vision for multi-site ministry in their county. The second site is located about 5 miles from the college location and the building design there will support a developing strategy for community center types of ministry. The facility is already being used to house numerous kid’s sports leagues.
Here are three things that we talked about that you may learn from and/or have insight into …
- One of the current foci is clarification of the College Church DNA. A great question that they are using to guide their discovery is – “What would be lost if College Church went out of existence?” Might be a good question for your teams to ask as well.
- In a changing culture as the suburbs extend into their traditional farming communities, how do you raise the line of quality, meeting the demands of the new constituency and providing adequate reasoning for the existing congregation who are satisfied with the current quality?
- One of the often stated strengths of the multi-site church is the opportunity to create smaller worshipping communities. How do you encourage the “feel” of a smaller church and still do the things that are required to “run” a church of 2000+?
